SCORING
Scoring System 97-100 Points = An exceptional wine that must be tasted to be believed. The next level of quality. A wine with few peers, period. The best of the best. 93-96 Points = An outstanding wine representing the best in its class and meriting the attention of its peers and the world stage. 90-92 Points = An excellent wine that is a textbook example of its type and a sincere pleasure to drink. 87-89 Points = A very good wine that exemplifies a strong example of the varietals involved and makes for enjoyable drinking. 84-86 Points = A solid wine with appealing character that is a solid example of its type. 80-83 Points = A simple wine that makes for "correct" drinking, if perhaps uninspiring. 77-79 Points = A wine with noticeable flaws that barely "makes the cut" for acceptable wine. 74-76 Points = A wine with obvious flaws that is better left on the shelf. A note on judging a wine's age-ability I believe that every winemaker would like to have his/her wine consumed at its peak. While determining a wine’s peak is subjective at best, I do not believe a wine’s peak is right before it starts to die of old age. So while it may be romantic to see how long a wine is capable of aging before it croaks, I prefer to recommend when I think wines will show their best, not the number of years I think they will last before fading away. My recommendations are based on years of tasting the same wines over a number of vintages to determine what I think is an ideal time to drink them. If you enjoy drinking younger wines or more aged wines then simply use my comments as guidelines. |
